Top Password Recovery Tools for Windows

Forgetting a password can be extremely frustrating especially if you’re in a hurry. Many times, there is a process to retrieving/resetting an old password which none of us have time for. How about we go a step further and pretend you have forgotten the administrative password to your windows computer. There is no “forgot your password” loophole you can go through to reset it… or is there? Even though Microsoft lacks a password reset button, there are many great FREE programs available to help you gain access to your locked device. Here are the top password recovery tools for windows.

This post will briefly cover which programs we prefer to use as well as the pros and cons of each. While password cracking can sound like a malicious activity to some people, it’s completely legal to use the applications to crack into your own personal computer. Our list of programs will help you gain access to computers running the following: Windows 10/8/7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP. We will specify if a program excludes certain operating systems.

Offline NT Password and Registry Editor

This program will be unlike the others on this list because instead of recovering a password that already exists, it will instead reset/erase the current one that exists. If you can get through the command line steps depicted on their website tutorial, you will enjoy the quick recovery that it offers.

Offline NT Password and Registry Editor is an excellent choice because you won’t have to install anything on your computer. Instead, it requires that you burn the program itself to a disc or copy to a flash drive to run. The nature of this allows the user to achieve the end result without the internet.

Ophcrack presents the most hassle-free experience currently available. If you aren’t exactly tech-savvy or enjoy the idea of automatic password recovery, this is the program for you. Like ONTP&RE, there is no installation needed to use Ophcrack- you can use a flash drive or a disc.

There are some limitations and downfalls we have experience using the program though. For one, the size of the Ophcrack file itself is massive. Also, if your password is more than 14 characters in length you can forget about recovering it using this free software. While Ophcrack is very fast and easy to use, it’s not the most powerful in our opinion.

Trinity Rescue Kit

Like the last two programs, Trinity Rescue Kit needs to be booted from a disc or flash drive. This software is unique because it allows you to delete, recover, or change a lost password without accessing an alternative Windows user account. While Trinity isn’t as easy as Ophcrack to use, it still presents a relatively simple process for the user. With a few quick command line steps, the interface doesn’t look as pretty but is manageable to the average person.

While the downfalls of Trinity Rescue Kit are limited, the one thing we aren’t a fan of is the fact that you must start the program before booting windows. While this may seem minor it still presents an inconvenience. Overall this is a great choice if you don’t care what your interface looks like and you can handle a command line.

Similar to most of the others, Kon-Boot requires that you download the file onto a disk or flash drive. This is widely considered to be the easiest password programs available. There is no hard drive installation required and the download file size is relatively small as well. Kon-Boot offers the functionality of resetting and erasing passwords with a custom interface.

Unfortunately, Kon-Boot is not applicable for newer windows computers and should only be used by people running Windows 7 or older. For this reason, it doesn’t make the top of the list. If you are running an older operating system and need a password very quickly- this is the program for you.

Our final password recovery tool of choice is LCP. This program works well but is only intended for users who have access to another user account on the same computer. LCP installs straight on to your computer’s hard drive using a small file size and runs very quickly.

LCP has stopped receiving updates and is very outdated at this point. In fact, the operating systems that it supports are so limited it almost didn’t make it on our list. Along with this, LCP isn’t the most user-friendly in the bunch either.
